PURPOSE: Investigating the causes of visual loss and the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) is crucial for identifying avoidable eye problems and planning appropriate rehabilitation and assistive technology (AT) services. The study aimed to identify various causes of vision loss and determine AT required for vision rehabilitation (VR). METHODS: The electronic records of patients who attended the VR clinic at a tertiary eyecare for the past 2 years were reviewed. Information such as demographics, BCVA, and causes of visual impairment were retrieved from the records. BCVA was categorized into better than or equal to 1/60 and less than <1/60 for AT services. RESULTS: In total, 1723 patients, mostly male (71.2%), visited the rehabilitation clinic from 2018 to 2019. Around 58.6% of patients belonged to the age group 16-49 years, whereas 25.6% were less than 15 years old. The most frequent eye problems were retinal disorders (63.5%), followed by retinitis pigmentosa (15.2%) and rod-cone dystrophy (4.7%). In contrast, congenital disorders were the most common cause of vision loss among younger groups. Approximately 36.0% of patients had <1/60 blindness and 16.6% had ≥1/60. Around 17.1% of patients would benefit from large prints (near vision acuity N18-N12). CONCLUSION: Early detection and timely management will prevent a significant proportion of patients from developing irreversible vision loss. Around one-third of patients would benefit from visual substitution AT.

BACKGROUND: Cambodia is a low-income country in South East Asia with a population of 15.5 million people of whom 4.9 million (38%) are under the age of 16. The causes of childhood blindness in Cambodia have not been investigated since the first survey of schools for the blind done in 2009 by our group. Given the large demographic and economic shifts in Cambodia since 2009 it is important to determine if these causes have changed in order to ensure intervention programmes are appropriately targeted. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the prevalence of causes of childhood blindness at schools for the blind in Cambodia. METHODS: Students between the ages of 5 and 16 years who were attending schools for the blind in Cambodia were examined by a consultant paediatric ophthalmologist and had clinical photographs taken. Distance visual acuity was measured using a logMAR tumbling E chart and the WHO definitions of blindness and severe visual impairment were used. The examining ophthalmologist recorded the anatomical site and aetiology of vision loss using the WHO Prevention of Blindness eye examination record for children. Collected data were compared to a previous survey from 2009. RESULTS: Data from 73 students were included for analysis. The most common anatomical location of abnormality causing vision loss was the cornea (n = 20, 33.9%) followed by the lens and retina (n = 11, 18.64% each). Hereditary factors (n = 29, 49.15%) and childhood diseases (n = 27, 45.76%) were the most common aetiological causes of childhood blindness. The majority (71.19%) of childhood blindness was avoidable. The present study did not demonstrate 0a significant difference in the causes of childhood blindness compared to 2009. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal pathologies continue to represent the most common cause of vision loss amongst the surveyed population and the majority of causes of childhood blindness continue to be avoidable. These findings will facilitate the development of evidence-based targeted interventional programmes in Cambodia.

AIM: To report on the distribution of eye diseases, aetiologies of severe visual impairment/blindness (SVI/BL) and unmet eye care needs of the Syrian refugee population and the Lebanese host community. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed the data of patients that were examined during the Ayounkon project -an eye health care project offering medical and surgical treatment for Syrian refugees and Lebanese host community in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. The project took place in three different primary health care centres and involved cooperation between several NGOs and ophthalmologists working on a voluntary basis. Data was analysed for distribution of eye diseases and aetiologies responsible for monocular and binocular SVI/BL. RESULTS: A total of 2067 patients were included, 677 were children < 18 years. The most frequent pathologies were ocular allergy (10%), and cataract (7.4%). 158 patients (7.6%) were referred for surgery. Glasses were prescribed for 1103 patients (53.4%), of whom 242 (21.9%) were children of school age. SVI/BL was found in 276 patients (13%). The condition was bilateral in 116 patients (42%). SVI/BL was significantly more frequent in the Syrian population than in the Lebanese (186 patients, 14.8% versus 86 patients, 11.3%; p = 0.04). The main causes for SVI/BL were cataract, keratoconus/corneal decompensation and amblyopia. CONCLUSION: The Syrian refugee population and the Lebanese host community have a high prevalence of ophthalmic pathologies and SVI/BL. Visual impairment is more prevalent in the refugee population. Our findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions and access to eye care services for these populations.

PURPOSE: To investigate the current prevalence and causes of moderate and severe visual impairment (MSVI) and blindness in elderly people in suburban Shanghai, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study based on the population was conducted, which involved 5846 individuals (11,692 eyes) aged 65 years or older. Thorough eye examinations were performed to assess the prevalence and leading factors of MSVI (BCVA <20/63 to ≥20/400) and blindness (BCVA <20/400). RESULTS: The standardized prevalence of bilateral MSVI and blindness was 3.3% and 0.6%, correspondingly. The standardized prevalence of monocular MSVI and blindness was 7.4% and 2.0%, correspondingly. Cataract (47.9% and 20.7%, correspondingly) and myopic macular degeneration (MMD, 25.7% and 31.1%, correspondingly) were the principal causes of bilateral MSVI and blindness. As for monocular MSVI, the primary causes were cataract (39.4%), age-related macular degeneration (AMD, 16.6%), and MMD (16.6%). The primary causes of monocular blindness were other posterior segment eye diseases (30.1%) and MMD (14.2%). In adults aged 65-74 years, MMD was the foremost factor causing bilateral vision impairment. Conversely, cataract was identified as the primary cause of bilateral and monocular vision impairment among adults aged ≥ 75 years. AMD accounts for a significant proportion of individuals across all age groups. CONCLUSIONS: The significant prevalence of MSVI and blindness among Chinese adults represents a critical public health issue. In addition to cataract, the vision impairment caused by MMD and AMD become an important issue in the elderly Chinese people.

AIM: To determine the prevalence and the causes of severe visual impairment and blindness (SVI/BL) in children at a tertiary referral centre in Rwanda. METHODS: In this retrospective study, files of all patients <18 years presenting during the year 2019 at the Kabgayi Eye Unit in Rwanda with SVI/BL (presenting visual acuity of <6/60 Snellen or lack of preferential looking behaviour) in at least one eye were analysed for age, sex, laterality, province of origin and cause of SVI/BL. Causes were categorised according to WHO standard classification. RESULTS: Out of 3939 children presenting to the clinic, 428 (10.9%) had SVI/BL in at least one eye. 165 (4.2%) patients had bilateral and 263 (6.7%) had unilateral condition. Of patients with BL/SVI, 36.7% were below the age of 6 years. In bilateral BL/SVI, the main causes were cataract (18%), refractive error (18%), keratoconus (13%), congenital eye anomaly (9%), glaucoma (8%), cortical blindness (8%) and retinoblastoma (6%). In unilateral BL/SVI it was trauma (46%), cataract (8%), keratoconus (8%), infectious corneal disease (7%) and retinoblastoma (7%). In preschool children, retinopathy of prematurity accounted for 7% of bilateral BL/SVI. Avoidable BL/SVI accounted for 87% of all cases. CONCLUSION: The high number of avoidable causes for SVI/BL may be reduced through several cost-effective ways.

Objective: To investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of sports-related eye injuries in China, as well as how they differ depending on the sport or other specific factor that caused them. Methods: Consecutive medical records from 2015 to 2019 of sports-related eye injuries from a standardized database in nine tertiary referral hospitals in China were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: A total of 377 eyes in 376 inpatients (mean age, 22.5 ± 7.3 years; men:women 15.4:1) were included. Soccer (46.8%), basketball (27.1%), and badminton (16.8%) were the top three sports that caused injury. Ball strikes (74.7%), physical collision (13.8%), and racket/equipment beating (9.0%) were the common specific causes of injury. Blunt force injuries (95.8%) and close globe injuries (95.1%) accounted for the majority of injuries. Open globe injuries occurred more in basketball (8.3%) than in other sports, mainly due to physical collision (12.8%) and racket/equipment beating (11.8%). Basketball (13.4%) or physical collision (21.3%) caused Zone I injuries more frequently than other sports. Soccer (60.5%) and basketball (54.6%) caused more injuries to the posterior segment of the eyeball than other sports, mainly due to ball strikes (96.6%). Badminton (69.8%) and racket beating (61.8%) caused more Zone II globe injuries than other sports. In badminton, the percentage of hyphema (85.7%), the most typical symptom of eye damage, and ultimate visual acuity (VA) ≥20/40 (88.9%) was the greatest. A final low vision score of (≤4/200) was observed in 10.6% of all participants, including three participants who had an eye removed due to rupturing. The final VA was positively correlated with the presenting VA (r = 0.421). Conclusion: Sports can lead to high proportions of ocular contusion injury and low vision. VA prognosis is closely related to initial VA following ocular sports trauma, which is directly determined by the causative sports and/or the specific causes. Effective eye protection is imperative to avoid or reduce visual impairments of sports participants.

Background: Retinal disorders cause substantial visual burden globally. Accurate estimates of the vision loss due to retinal diseases are pivotal to inform optimal eye health care planning and allocation of medical resources. The purpose of this study is to describe the proportion of visual impairment and blindness caused by major retinal diseases in China. Methods: A nationwide register-based study of vitreoretinal disease covering all 31 provinces (51 treating centres) of mainland China. A total of 28 320 adults diagnosed with retinal diseases were included. Participants underwent standardised ocular examinations, which included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), dilated-fundus assessments, and optical coherence tomography. Visual impairment and blindness are defined using BCVA according to the World Health Organization (WHO) (visual impairment: <20/63-≥20/400; blindness: <20/400) and the United States (visual impairment: <20/40-≥20/200; blindness: <20/200) definitions. The risk factors of vision loss were explored by logistic regression analyses. Results: Based on the WHO definitions, the proportions for unilateral visual impairment and blindness were 46% and 18%, respectively, whereas those for bilateral visual impairment and blindness were 31% and 3.3%, respectively. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) accounts for the largest proportion of patients with visual impairment (unilateral visual impairment: 32%, bilateral visual impairment: 60%) and blindness (unilateral blindness: 35%; bilateral blindness: 64%). Other retinal diseases that contributed significantly to vision loss included age-related macular degeneration, myopic maculopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and other macular diseases. Women (bilateral vision loss: P = 0.011), aged patients (unilateral vision loss: 45-64 years: P < 0.001, ≥65 years: P < 0.001; bilateral vision loss: 45-64 years: P = 0.003, ≥65 years: P < 0.001 (reference: 18-44 years)) and those from Midwest China (unilateral and bilateral vision loss: both P < 0.001) were more likely to suffer from vision loss. Conclusions: Retinal disorders cause substantial visual burden among patients with retinal diseases in China. DR, the predominant retinal disease, is accountable for the most prevalent visual disabilities. Better control of diabetes and scaled-up screenings are warranted to prevent DR. Specific attention should be paid to women, aged patients, and less developed regions.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide, is one of the major microvascular complications in diabetes mellitus (DM). Globally, DR prevalence among DM patients is 25%, and 6% have vision-threatening problems among them. With the higher incidence of DM globally, more DR cases are expected to be seen in the future. In order to comprehend the pathophysiological mechanism of DR in humans and discover potential novel substances for the treatment of DR, investigations are typically conducted using various experimental models. Among the experimental models, in vivo models have contributed significantly to understanding DR pathogenesis. There are several types of in vivo models for DR research, which include chemical-induced, surgical-induced, diet-induced, and genetic models. Similarly, for the in vitro models, there are several cell types that are utilised in DR research, such as retinal endothelial cells, Müller cells, and glial cells. With the advancement of DR research, it is essential to have a comprehensive update on the various experimental models utilised to mimic DR environment. This review provides the update on the in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models used in DR research, focusing on their features, advantages, and limitations.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate color perception (CP) changes on Ishihara plates following red-tinted contact lenses in subjects with low vision (LV) from retinal diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study without control involved 84 subjects, aged 20-70 years, having LV from retinal diseases to examine CP changes following wearing red-tinted contact lenses. The subjects viewed Ishihara plates, with each eye separately, before and after wearing red lenses in two categories: "plates 1-21" and "plates 22-25". Change in CP with the use of a red lens was the primary outcome measure. Results: There was a significant increase in the number of plates read in both categories, that is, plates 1-21 (P = 0.002) and plates 22-25 (P = 0.032), the latter being used to diagnose the red-green defects. Although 70 eyes could read both digits on plates 22-25 and appeared to have normal color vision (CV) at baseline, this number rose to 99 eyes following the use of red-tinted lenses. There was a significant change in the type of CP (red defect/green defect/normal/undefined defect) (P = 0.022) with the application of a red-tinted lens. Conclusions: The use of red-tinted lenses caused a significant increase in the number of plates read, increased the number of subjects who appeared normal on plates 22-25, and significantly changed CP of LV subjects. These lenses can be a valuable aid for LV subjects. Although Ishihara plates can diagnose only red-green defects, further studies on CV testing techniques that detect both red-green and blue-yellow CV defects are recommended.

Importance: High myopia is a global concern due to its escalating prevalence and the potential risk of severe visual impairment caused by pathologic myopia. Using artificial intelligence to estimate future visual acuity (VA) could help clinicians to identify and monitor patients with a high risk of vision reduction in advance. Objective: To develop machine learning models to predict VA at 3 and 5 years in patients with high myopia. Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective, single-center, cohort study was performed on patients whose best-corrected VA (BCVA) at 3 and 5 years was known. The ophthalmic examinations of these patients were performed between October 2011 and May 2021. Thirty-four variables, including general information, basic ophthalmic information, and categories of myopic maculopathy based on fundus and optical coherence tomography images, were collected from the medical records for analysis. Main Outcomes and Measures: Regression models were developed to predict BCVA at 3 and 5 years, and a binary classification model was developed to predict the risk of developing visual impairment at 5 years. The performance of models was evaluated by discrimination metrics, calibration belts, and decision curve analysis. The importance of relative variables was assessed by explainable artificial intelligence techniques. Results: A total of 1616 eyes from 967 patients (mean [SD] age, 58.5 [14.0] years; 678 female [70.1%]) were included in this analysis. Findings showed that support vector machines presented the best prediction of BCVA at 3 years (R2 = 0.682; 95% CI, 0.625-0.733) and random forest at 5 years (R2 = 0.660; 95% CI, 0.604-0.710). To predict the risk of visual impairment at 5 years, logistic regression presented the best performance (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.870; 95% CI, 0.816-0.912). The baseline BCVA (logMAR odds ratio [OR], 0.298; 95% CI, 0.235-0.378; P < .001), prior myopic macular neovascularization (OR, 3.290; 95% CI, 2.209-4.899; P < .001), age (OR, 1.578; 95% CI, 1.227-2.028; P < .001), and category 4 myopic maculopathy (OR, 4.899; 95% CI, 1.431-16.769; P = .01) were the 4 most important predicting variables and associated with increased risk of visual impairment at 5 years. Conclusions and Relevance: Study results suggest that developing models for accurate prediction of the long-term VA for highly myopic eyes based on clinical and imaging information is feasible. Such models could be used for the clinical assessments of future visual acuity.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cataracts, refractive disorders, age-related macular disease (AMD), and glaucoma, as well as their trends from 1990 to 2019 in Iran, in comparison with high-middle socio-demographic index (HMSDI) countries and the world, using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study. METHODS: The GBD study provided data on the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment (VI), as well as four of their causes including cataracts, refractive disorders, age-related macular disease (AMD), and glaucoma. Using Joinpoint analysis, the annual percent change (APC) was calculated to assess the trend of change in prevalence in each category of diseases from 1990 to 2019, stratified by sex and age, for Iran, HMSDI countries, and the world. RESULTS: In 2019, refractive errors and cataracts were the most common causes of blindness and VI for both genders in Iran, HMSDI countries and the world. Iran had a higher age-standardized prevalence in all four categories of ophthalmologic disorders compared to HMSDI countries and the world for both genders in 2019. Additionally, the age-specific prevalence of all four disorders in 2019 was higher in Iran compared to HMSDI countries. However, in terms of trends of prevalence from 1990 to 2019, the rate of reduction for the four ophthalmologic disorders in Iran was higher than in HMSDI and the world for both males and females. Furthermore, Iran had a greater percentage of reduction in prevalence for all age groups in all four disorders compared to HMSDI countries. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of cataracts, refractive errors, AMD, and glaucoma in Iran was higher compared to HMSDI countries in 2019 for both sexes and all age groups, but the trends of prevalence for all four disorders from 1990 to 2019 in Iran had a higher slope of reduction compared to HMSDI countries for all ages and sexes.

Purpose: To document the spectrum and magnitude of eye disorders and visual impairment in the Dongaria-a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group in the Rayagada district of Odisha, India. Methods: A door-to-door screening protocol included a record of basic health parameters, visual acuity for distance, and near and flashlight examination of the eyes. Spectacles were dispensed to those who improved; those who failed the screening were referred to fixed (primary and secondary) eye care centers. Results: We examined 89% (n = 9872/11,085) of people who consented for screening. The mean age was 25.5 ± 18.8 years; 55% (n = 5391) were female; 13.8% (n = 1361) were under-five children, and 39% (n = 3884) were 6 to 16 years. 86% (n = 8515) were illiterate. 12.4% (n = 1224) were visually impaired, of which 9.9% had early moderate VI, and 2.5% had severe VI and blindness. Uncorrected refractive error was detected in 7.5% (n = 744) and cataracts in 7.6% (n = 754); among the adults, 41.5% (n = 924/2227) had presbyopia. In children, 20% (n = 790) had vitamin A deficiency, 17% (n = 234) had global acute malnutrition, and 18% (n = 244) were stunted for their age. Almost two-thirds (62%, n = 6144) confirmed habitual intake of alcohol, and 4% (n = 389) of adults had essential hypertension. Following the screening, 43.5% (n = 837) of referred patients reported to the fixed centers, and 55% (134/243) of people advised underwent cataract surgery. Spectacles were dispensed to 1496 individuals. Conclusion: Visual impairment and malnutrition are high in Dongaria indigenous community. Permanent health facilities and advocacy would improve this community's health and health-seeking behavior.

PURPOSE: To investigate disparities in the prevalence and causes of visual impairment and blindness, cataract surgical coverage, and ocular findings in older adults from two Brazilian geo-socio-demographic areas, São Paulo and Parintins cities. METHODS: Data from two population-based studies including participants 50 years and older from the cities of São Paulo (São Paulo Eye Study - SPES, 2004) and Parintins (Brazilian Amazon Region Eye Survey - BARES, 2014) were aggregated. RESULTS: A total of 5318 participants (3677 from SPES;1641 from BARES) were included. The prevalence of severe visual impairment (SVI) and blindness were, respectively, 0.74% (0.46-1.02) and 0.77% (0.48-1.05) in SPES and 1.72% (1.09-2.35) and 3.44% (2.55-4.33) in BARES. SVI and blindness were associated with BARES study [OR = 2.27 (1.30-3.95); p = .004 - SVI] [OR:4.07 (2.51-6.60); p < .001- blindness]; and older age [OR = 10.93 (4.20-28.45); p < .001 - SPES; OR = 17.96 (8.75-36.83); p < .001 - BARES] while higher education level was a protective factor [OR = 0.21 (0.05-0.95) - SPES; p = .042; OR = 0.21 (0.05-0.91); p = .037 - BARES]. Cataract was the main cause of bilateral severe visual impairment (25.93% in SPES and 64.29% in BARES) and bilateral blindness (21.43% in SPES and 35.71% in BARES). Cataract surgical coverage was significantly lower in BARES (36.32%) compared to SPES (57.75%). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of SVI and blindness was three times higher in older adults from the Brazilian Amazon compared to those living in São Paulo city, despite a 10-year interval between the two studies. These disparities should be mitigated by initiatives to promote access to eye care services targeting underprivileged and remote Brazilian areas.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), currently, 2.2 billion people are living with visual impairment worldwide, of which almost half could have been prevented. There are both modifiable and unmodifiable factors leading to visual disability and, ultimately, blindness. Several population-based studies in different parts of Iran have tried to determine these factors concerning their specific population and environment-related characteristics. AZAR Eye and Vision cohort is the second-largest cohort study in the whole country. AZAR Eye and Vision cohort is the ophthalmologic branch of AZAR cohort which is the largest eye cohort study in the country, which is trying to determine the prevalence and incidence of visual impairment, blindness, and other major ophthalmologic conditions and their associated risk factors in East Azerbaijan province located in Iran, a middle eastern country. A recently emerging phenomenon is the drying of the ultra-salty lake of Urmia located in the West Azerbaijan province which is a direct neighbor of our studied population and has caused recurrent salt storms in the immediate near areas. This phenomenon could adversely affect visual health via different conditions which our study will elucidate. The enrollment phase took place between 2014 and 2017 and 11,208 participants were enrolled out of 15,000 participants in the primary cohort. The resurvey phase will begin five years after the enrollment phase. In this phase, 30% of the participants are randomly selected to be reexamined and complete questionnaires. The participants showing any issues such as diabetes and being a glaucoma suspect will be included in the resurvey phase, too. Data categories gathered include demographics, lifestyle factors, past medical and drug histories, and a diet quality and quantity questionnaire including 130 edible items. Urine, hair, nail, and 25-ml blood samples, were collected from the participants. Then they were referred to an optometrist to complete an ophthalmologic questionnaire and undergo eye examination and lensometry. Then they underwent slit-lamp examinations and pictures were taken of the lens and fundus. People with suspected visual impairment were referred to an ophthalmology clinic. The data are processed and a four-level quality check is performed on each block. The most common visual impairment is cataracts. This study's most important aim is to evaluate the effect of local environmental and ethnic factors on eye diseases in this specific population.

Ocular coloboma is a rare congenital disability. If involving the macula, it affects the patient's vision and subsequently affects childhood development and quality of life in the future. Appropriate low vision aid and timely rehabilitation can provide the best possible quality of life for visually impaired children. We report a 9-year-old boy who presented with a diminution of vision in both eyes, and who was just enrolled in pre-school. He was diagnosed with bilateral iridochorioretinal coloboma associated with nystagmus and unilateral cataract. After all the necessary evaluation, a telescope was prescribed for distance and a dome magnifier for near. Furthermore, a peaked cap and photo grey lens were given for outdoor activities. This case highlights the importance of low vision intervention in a visually impaired child. Appropriate low vision aid and rehabilitation can improve patients' lifestyle and academic performance who are diagnosed with iridochorioretinal coloboma. INTRODUCTION: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of irreversible visual impairment in the United Kingdom. It has a wide-ranging detrimental impact on daily living, including impairment of functional ability and quality of life. Assistive technology designed to overcome this impairment includes wearable electronic vision enhancement systems (wEVES). This scoping review assesses the usefulness of these systems for people with AMD. METHODS: Four databases (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane CENTRAL) were searched to identify papers that investigated image enhancement with a head-mounted electronic device on a sample population that included people with AMD. RESULTS: Thirty-two papers were included: 18 studied the clinical and functional benefits of wEVES, 11 investigated use and usability and 3 discussed sickness and adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS: Wearable electronic vision enhancement systems provide hands-free magnification and image enhancement producing significant improvements in acuity, contrast sensitivity and aspects of laboratory-simulated daily activity. Adverse effects were infrequent, minor and spontaneously resolved with the removal of the device. However, when symptoms arose, they sometimes persisted with continued device usage. There are multi-factorial influences and a diversity of user opinions on promotors to successful device use. These factors are not exclusively driven by visual improvement and incorporate other issues including device weight, ease of use and inconspicuous design. There is insufficient evidence of any cost-benefit analysis for wEVES. However, it has been shown that a user's decision to make a purchase evolves over time, with their estimates of cost falling below the retail price of the devices. Additional research is needed to understand the specific and distinct benefits of wEVES for people with AMD. Further patient-centred research should assess the benefits of wEVES in user-led activities when directly compared with alternative coping strategies, allowing professionals and users to make better prescribing and purchasing decisions.

Blindness with no light perception is clinically irreversible. This cross-sectional hospital-based study analyzed patients presenting with no light perception in at least one eye. Between 2010 and 2022, 60,668 (1.85%) such patients were identified, of which 3,476 (5.73%) had bilateral and 57,192 (94.27%) had unilateral blindness. The major causes were glaucoma (21.8%), trauma (17.7%), phthisis bulbi (13.1%), retinal diseases (10.6%), anophthalmos (7.8%), and optic atrophy (4.9%). The majority of the affected individuals were adults (89.9%) and male (64%), and affected individuals were more likely to be from the lower socio-economic strata (3.14%) and from a rural location (1.99%). Despite recent therapeutic advances in ophthalmology, many patients with blindness cannot be restored to sight. Although preventive measures can mitigate sight loss to some extent, regenerative therapies, retinal and ciliary body transplantation, and whole eyeball transplantation need to be developed as sight restorative procedures to help those who currently have no hope of regaining vision.

Objetivo Identificar las enfermedades oculares que se reportan como causas de la baja visión en los niños. Material y métodos La búsqueda sistemática se realizó en Medline (PubMed), Embase y Lilacs. Se seleccionaron estudios observacionales con poblaciones entre 0-18 años de edad, que reportaran datos de agudeza visual entre 20/60-20/400, y que informaran sobre la frecuencia de enfermedades oculares. Se excluyeron los estudios en los que el diagnóstico de la condición no hubiera sido verificado por un profesional, o que abarcaran únicamente casos de ceguera, defectos refractivos no corregidos o ambliopía. La calidad metodológica de los artículos se evaluó mediante el instrumento del Instituto Joanna Briggs para estudios de prevalencia. Resultados Fueron incluidos 27 estudios realizados en Asia (13 publicaciones), África (6 estudios), Oceanía (4 estudios) y Europa y Sudamérica (2 estudios cada uno). Las causas de la baja visión más reportadas fueron: la catarata, con prevalencias comprendidas entre el 0,8 y el 27,2%; el albinismo desde el 1,1 al 47%; el nistagmo, con prevalencias entre el 1,3 y el 22%; las distrofias de retina entre el 3,5 y el 50%; la retinopatía del prematuro (ROP) con prevalencias entre el 1,1 y el 65,8%; la atrofia óptica entre el 0,2 y el 17,6% y el glaucoma entre el 2,4 y el 18,1%. Conclusiones La catarata, el albinismo y el nistagmo son las enfermedades oculares más mencionadas por los estudios como causas de la baja visión en los niños, también enfermedades de la retina tales como la ROP y del nervio óptico como la atrofia. Sin embargo, son numerosas las condiciones oculares que pueden causar la baja visión en la población pediátrica. (AU)


Objective To identify the ocular pathologies that are reported as causes of low vision in children. Material and methods The systematic search was carried out in Medline (PubMed), Embase and Lilacs. Observational studies with populations between 0-18 years of age, reporting visual acuity data between 20/60-20/400 and reporting the frequency of ocular pathologies were selected. Results27 studies conducted in Asia (13 publications), Africa (6 studies), Oceania (4 studies), Europe and South America (2 studies each) were included. The most reported causes of low vision were: cataract, with prevalence between 0.8% and 27.2%; albinism with from 1.1% to 47%; nystagmus, with prevalence between 1.3% and 22%; retinal dystrophies between 3.5% and 50%; retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) with prevalence between 1.1% and 65.8%, optic atrophy between 0.2% and 17.6%, and glaucoma from 2.4% to 18.1%. Conclusions Cataract, albinism and nystagmus are the ocular pathologies most mentioned by studies as a cause of low vision in children, as well as retinal diseases such as ROP and optic nerve diseases such as atrophy. Purpose: The present study was a population-based study to determine the prevalence and causes of low vision in children less than 16 years in North India. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 40 clusters of urban Delhi. Children aged less than 16 years underwent visual acuity screening using age-appropriate visual acuity charts. All children with visual acuity of <6/12 in any eye in the age group between 3 and 15 years and inability to follow the light in age less than 3 years were referred for detailed ophthalmic examination in a centrally based clinic. Cycloplegic examination and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were assessed. They were examined by an ophthalmologist to determine the prevalence and causes of functional low vision (FLV). The prevalence of FLV was compared with other population-based studies across India and other parts of the world. Results: Amongst 20,955 children examined for visual acuity, 789 children were referred to the central clinic for detailed ophthalmic examination. The overall prevalence of low vision was 0.62 per 1,000 children (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.12-1.90). The main anatomical cause of low vision was retinal abnormalities. Conclusion: Although the prevalence of children with low vision decreased as compared to previous population-based studies. There is an important need to create awareness among parents on appropriate and timely usage of low-vision devices (LVDs) at an affordable cost to improve the visual quality in children with low vision.
